Ok... so here is the deal.

At the current moment i am doing my IDC in Johannesburg for my Scuba Instructors. I am looking in buying a house in KNZ that i can convert into a Scuba Diving School. But i need some advice. Actually a lot of advice.

My idea is to build a 16m X 16m X 5m marine Reef pool for confined water dives. I am a draftsman for a civil and structural engineering company in Randburg so when it comes to reinforcing the concrete walls i have this all under my thumb.

What i need help with though is filtration. Its a huge pool at approx 120000L of water i need to know what i will be setting up will not undercut in any way shape or form.

The filtration system will be located in a brick house the size of a double garage that will be especially build to accommodate this system. What i need to know is how much water should pass through the filtration system every minute to keep water at optimal conditions. What will the approx size of the skimmer need to be?

Money is really not the problem here. Its expertise. So i want to turn to all of marine aquariums sa to hear what your thoughts is in regards to this project. I have until Oct2012 to get this under my knee. That’s when construction will start

Thank you in advance for all advice, sugestions & constructive critisizm just in case i dont get around to thanking everyone:thumbup:

Sheesh!! All I can say is you got some steel kahones! but this will be an epic build if you go thru with it:slayer:
This is why i need all the advice i can get. All sugestions will be taken into consideration. So please help me out on this project. i have about 240K to throw at it.:yeahdude:

Bud you going to have a big job with moving 1280 cubes (1,280,000L) of salt water. I think your budget will run out very quickly. At that price you will need to pay 18,75C per liter.

@CrazyTang I am assuming this pool is not a perfect square but still your volume surely can't be 10% of the actual volume
Either way you going to need to get an 8 ton truck to do your collecting of salt water for your water changes.

We shall be glad to assist in this project we have consulted on aquariums between 40 and 80 thousand litres before but most of which have only been pipeline dreams but can certainly point you in the right direction.

I do be leave your 240k will not suffice even if you where to run an open system between the pool and the sea budgets for previous systems where well into a million on the 80 thousand liter system.

But wish you all the best.

Is that the budget for the filtration system or for the entire project?
thats budget for filter system only

Transporting the water and paying for collection not really a problem. This is why im exploring my options to see if i can get this done right

Well i have to see what can be done with a total of 800K more than that i rather make the pool smaller. I just dont want to give up because of cashflow problems. I would rather fail at tying than fail at not trying

But then again its only 120 cubes of water as the pool isnt 1,280.000L. Where will 1.28m L water go 10 a 120000L pool

Did you do your DM through PADI?

If so please contact me when all of this is done, is still have to complete my DM course,
oh and i want to dive your pool;)

16m X 16m x 5m = 1280 x 1000 for volume
Is 1,280,000 ltr of water

This is to say its like an aquarium else give us the average L x W x D

Bud the literage for 16m x 16m x 5m is 1,280,000L.

The predator tank at two oceans aquariums is just over 2m liters and the kelp forest is 800,000 liters.

I’m doing my instructors through PADI not dive masters . Dive masters has long time come and gone. Now i want to get to the next level
I’m tired of JHB as i was born in Richards Bay but moved here in 2006. Biggest mistake of my life coming here. The only good thing coming from JHB is my 2 wonderful children and my Fiancé whom i have the honour of marrying in Mauritius this coming week

OK the pool at Sandton Scuba is 10m X 12m x 3m that is 360000 Liters. so you want to go a third of that. At 3m I take it will be the minimum depth because you want to be able to do confined water teaching i presume.

That is going to be a pool size of approx 8m x 5m x 3m

Do u think that will be big enough for confined dive training?

16m X 16m x 5m
another perspective, if this was a square house, that means is will have a floor area of 256 square meters. A big house of easily double garage, 3 living areas and 3 bedrooms, all rooms on the plus side. That for the ground floor only. You going double storey - 5m high. So you are looking at at least 512 square meter house.

16 * 16 m square, you can easily park about 24 cars. OK tight fit, and not S class Mercedes.

Rather dream about this:
have the honour of marrying in Mauritius this coming week
