My surgeons have had a rumble. Can a wound like this become infected and possibly be fatal?

Wow thats quite a gash, should be okay though. Keep an eye on the fish maybe a QT tank for the next week or so would be my recomendation, easier to watch.
 
As long as your water parameters are really good that should minimise the risk of infection, but as Alan said - QT may be easier to keep an eye - also look long term - is this going to happeng again? should you think about selling one or the other, having said that Acanthurus/zebrasoma species are not normally agressive toward each other
 
I think it will heal fine, but continous abuse like this may lead to the fishes demise. I’m fist in line if you want to sell either hey, plus there is a coral in your small tank that I’m seriously keen on.:p

Yeah that Fish looks nice and healthy, the gash should be gone in a couple of days.

The reason they show gashes so prolificaly is that Tangs don't have scales, so no protection. They cut pretty easy, but heal just as quick if they are in good shape.

To be honest these two are inseperable. I would swear that they even have feelings for one another.

For me that coral was a find of a life time.

She's in great shape. Wound is still clean and would appear to already be healing.

Nope, she don't forgive me, in fact the only time she missed me was when i ducked:whistling:
 
WOW! Cool sunburst! You know - I had 2 surgeons in my tank (BUT not for long unfortunately - they did EXACTLY the same). Unfortunately the new linaetus surgeon was still too new - and was not eating - my elongate surgeon also gashed it like that - and the lineatus's wound also healed - but unfortunately the stress caused white-spot (c. irritans) and this ended up causing the death of BOTH my surgeons, as well as a few other fish!

Sorry to hear that.... My guys have been shacked up since April 2007. There was some posturing and sabre rattling in the beginning but they are now truly the best of mates. Rotund bellies make many fish less aggressive. Hope you have Better luck next time
