Pablo has an eye infection

Since only the one eye is swollen and it's not cloudy, I'm diagnosing this as an injury-induced eye infection.

I QTed him below the tank. I think I'm just going to treat him with epson salt at this point. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to try an antibiotic.

Hi, can u give some more info about the use of Epsom salt? Dosage, method, why?

Honestly, I'm more of a corals and critters kinda gal. I don't know much about fish disease. But my buddies at WWM recommend 1 tablespoon (about 15ml) of epson salt per 5 gallons (about 19L) to treat an injury induced eye infection. They say it reduces the swelling and helps it heal.

I've never done it before myself. I'm curious to see if it works.

I KNOW this sounds stupid..:blush:..but how do you treat the Fish..? Dip him..?
 
You quarantine him (this much I know) and use the epson salt in there. See the last pic I posted. He's in a 10g (38L) QT tank below the display.

So he is swimming in Epson Salt?..38L sea salt "dilluted" with roughly 19L Epson Salt..?:blush::blush::blush:
 
You know, I just assumed the salt was added directly to the 38L QT. But maybe not. I'm going to have to read through this...

WOW..of cause..ish..could I really have had such a "blond" moment..:blush: but for the life of me, I couldn't figure it out yesterday..:p:lol::lol:
 
That fish has "Pop Eye" which comes from a few different causes. It usually goes away on it's own but if it gets worse and the eye looks like it will pop out, you can fix it in a few seconds with a hypodermic needle. You just stick it in the tissue where the eye connects to the skin and suck out the fluid which is infected. That malady is fluid or gas behind the eye and not the eye itself. It is very common. I also usually inject in some antibiotics then remove it but I am sure you will just want to leave it alone and wait to see if it cures on it's own.

Are you a doctor? I ask because, here in the US, it's not easy to get needles. We have a paranoia around drug addicts in this country. You can't even buy some kinds of cold medicine without showing an ID.

Off topic but the same thing here in sunny SA , for certain over the counter meds you need to give your name , tel , address etc.....but then I go buy needles and syringes for Aptasia zapping and no questions are asked..weird:p
 
I am not a doctor and I am in the US. I live in New York. (born in Brooklyn)
I can get needles because I know people who have to get injections every day.
I just take an old needle and clean it out with alcohol.
I would guess my Doctor would give me some if I asked him because he knows I will be using it on my fish.
I have cured Pop Eye dozens of times in aquarium stores and wholesalers. You don't puncture the eye but that thin stretched skin next to it, usually at the top.
The eye instantly goes back where it belongs.

+1, that's my old treatment for pop-eye. The fish will already be stressed from whatever caused the condition + stress from QT - not a good thing. I've always used a needle to deflate the eye.
 
Actually, I think the QT can potentially decrease stress depending on the circumstances -- and if you maintain normal water parameters and put it under low light. Being away from the other fish might also help. But I don't know for sure. Pablo seems pretty mellow in his QT tank.
 
Well, after 6 days he wasn't any better. So I added another dose of the Epsom salt and within 24hrs his eye was much better. Now after a week it's almost back to normal. I think next time, if I use Epsom salt again, I'm going to start off with more Epsom from the get-go (or not wait so long to increase the dose).

How would you differ the dosage amount from that of the recommended dosage given.. and/or.. the frequency of the recommended dosage schedule...?
