Morning!
Unecessary cost aside, are there benefits in using an overpowered skimmer in a system (assuming overflo/sump etc can handle it). Specifically I'm talking about running a 1500l skimmer in a 650l system. Would it make any positive difference?

Many advantages, firstly many skimmers are over rated by the manufacturer and many are rated on a light bio load. Infact a fairly safe calculation is to halve the rating on your skimmer, this also depends on what skimmer you are using. A skimmer rated at 1500L on a 650L system should be a safe bet.
Personally i run 2 skimmers both rated for the size of my system and seems to work for me.
 
yip the bigger the bettter.my total water volume inc LR etc...is +- 750L.im running a skimmer rated for a 1500l tank
 
The nice thing with a powerful skimmer is you can always set it dryer, and have lots of headroom for future loads.

Absolutely. An the immediate jump in redox and dissolved oxygen are enormous benefits. I run the Octypus 4 pump recirc rated at 4000 litres on a 1000litre system
 
Another big benefit is that in the event or a problem, (dead fish/snail/coral/bird :whistling: etc) a larger skimmer will remove the resulting organic waist much faster than a smaller skimmer. Potentially saving the whole system.

chuckle chuckle. It makes music all day long. Switch it off and the silence is deafening.
Baylys the other benefit with an overated skimmer would be that you could plumb all your overflow into your skimmer.

Redox i measure continuously and dowload to pc, so yes this measurement i am sure i can find for you. (not today tho. Wife getting ticked off because i should have started dressing for function):( I was running the deltec apf600 prior to the upgrade and can remember being surprised, as i had not anticipated this bonus.. As for dissolved oxygen, i only repeat from popular literature.
