Did anyone use potassium carbonate before? I read that this boosts your alk and this also doses some K. Seems better to use this instead of sodium carbonate because the sodium is not used (or so we think). So this could be a two part supplement.. Any input?

hmmm i wouldnt try it on a DT to start, best bet is to ask RHF on RC he is the chemist of reefers :)

I use one half a Teaspoon a week..

My alk stays at 6.5 and Potassium around 370-380

Seriously? Did you buy a bulk bag or are you using tartar salt? Also what test kit are you using for potassium?

Im a chemist.. Using the new Red Sea potassium kits

Oohhhhhhhhhhh  ... So you are using the bulk stuff? I can get the 25kg bag from protea chem. Does K carbonate have the same effect on alk as Baked bicarb? :)

Potassium carbonate is one of 4 components within the local additive Pure Reef Supplements kH Buffer as it maintains alkalinity better than Sodium carbonate, avoids imbalances due to sodium accumulation as well as adding Potasssium which is well known to assist with coral colours especially SPS.

Thanks boet! Do you know if it adds as much alk as sodium carbonate? Or would you know the dosing instructions? Its not on the reef chem calculator

Not quite sure what you mean here? the chemical is KCO3, so 1 potasssium for every carbon and 3 oxygen molecules?

I was crap at chem in school ok :p

alkalinity wise it would add the same as sodium carbonate, use it in same way as NaCO3.

Thanks boet! I will get a huge ass bag of this. Just finishing the kalk and bicarb that I already have :) .. Gonna click thanks :)

Mad... but seems Im right! Booya! ;)
