I am Brent and I'm relatively new to the marine aquarium game. At school I bred and sold some freshwater fish and also owned a nano marine tank. Now that I've got through most of my education at Uni I am keen on getting back into the game. This time however I'm keen on a smallish tank (until I move out of home) that I can keep some hard and soft corals along with a few other inverts (Crustaceans, echinoderms etc..) and one or two fish. I enjoy the outdoors and free diving so I plan on collecting most of my specimens, all legally of coarse. I'm a biologist so it wouldn't look good getting caught poaching hard corals off Vetche's reef).

I haven't got a tank as i'm still short of funds, but this has given Me some good time to research exactly what I want, with a lot of info coming from the forums and links on MASA! I have also seen how the marine experiment unit (at UKZN) is set up for growing corals etc, so I think I have a very basic view of how things work.

This year my Honours dissertation has included a genetic study on the connectivity of Acropora appressa along the KZN coast from Sodwana bay to Isipingo beach (still waiting on results), which gave Me an opportunity to have a good scouting of KZN rock pools. I'll post some picks of what I've seen soon.

BTW does anyone have an opinion on the new Aquaria 102L nano's? I've seen the 37L one at Northlands pets and it looks pretty good... Price?

Are your intentions for study perposes, I assume so. You will get a load of information on this forum.

You can get collection permits for study.

Hmm...A lot of advice from a old ballie. One needs to be pasionate and have the dedication to get involved in marines. A very Basic view is not good enough i am afraid.

I think a good start would be to get in touch with @Ash from Ushaka and offer your self for free service. I am sure help and experiance learned from him will be better than that found in a nano. Spend some time with the industry players who you hope will employ you one day. They could further your career.

Yes, some info on nice areas and nice rockpools will be great.

Been to Isispingo and Rocky bay last weekend. Very nice.

Yes I guess passion IS the key ingredient, and a lot of spare time :)

I do have a research permit, but the varsity is very sticky (rightly so) with what they allow us to catch.

No my tank won't be for research..

Awsome, I have some Q's about tank set up so I'll post them up later on the beginners forum.

Yes Isipingo is very good for inverts and a few fish. If you park at the reunion park pool (by the old isipingo ski boat club) and walk north towards the bluff. There are more rock pools there and they are relatively undisturbed by fishermen and the rubbish they often leave behind (Not dissing fishermen, i am one myself, but some of them can be very messy). However, I don't think taking a walk there alone is advisable (it's about a 1,5km walk from the pool, if you can get into SAPREF it's about a 100m walk)....
 
Yeah Brent!! wana go sometime? I cant find anybody willing enought to go with me :lol: its an atleast 45min walk... Where in durban you at bud? toti?

I did that long walk... But its worthwhile, especially that big pool on top of the rocks.
But walking back.... at least going, I had something I looked forward to.

Did you walk towards the refinery or to the rock pool where the guys fish from and stuff?
 
Parked at the southern side of the beach. Walk all the way up to the rocks that looks like a ships silhouette. Past the brewery outlet ditch, around that corner. I saw that if you have access (bribe the guards) you can park at the northern side of the beach. There was a lot of guys fishing on the northern side. Chad mostly, sardines were plentiful and the birds enjoyed themselves. I wished I could stay longer.
Had my kids and dad with me. And had to get the old man back past that ditch before the tide came in too much. So yeah, wished I could had the time to explore more. Plus the wind was not pleasant.
The other concern was a bunch of youngsters that camped out from previous night there on the rocks. Also some other dodgy characters that obviously would use any change to enriched themselves. Still early morning just after 10 and they were already heavily into their Black Label.
But I must admit, its a really nice area to walk around and check out.
