Looking for SCUBA Kit

Hi all

I'm seriously concidering doing a Scuba course and buying some kit. I've been told there is no need to buy brand new equipment as there is plenty good quality stuff out there. Does anyone now of some DECENT gear out there?

Find a scuba forum, sure there is something out there, that is what i do these days before i buy anything is to check if there is a forum for it and if there is there is usually nie bargains.

If you have not booked go to Coral Divers in Sodwana. I did mine last week and it was Awesome...

Thinking of doing mine though UKZN or Underwater World, Want to do a "full time" course, something like 5 days, How long did yours take? Padi or NAUI?

Also, this is the right time of the month to go past Cash Crusaders or Cash Converters, I was looking for some tools last week, and I saw at least 5 different wetsuits at the shops, all descent suits

Ummm, Don't know if I would trust buying something from one of those shops.... rather buy from someone that has records etc. Unless you know its newish and spares are available.
 
I know where you coming from Justin, but the one shop I went in, had a2 sets of scuba suits (fairly new), Mares diving goggles, Omar Fins, weight belts ets in one Diving Bag for R2000.00. I think it was definitely worth it

They are Padi - I did mine from a Thursday to Monday. Inc. everything was R3600...I think I paid an extra R900 to stay in a cabin as the standard fee inc. tented. I suggest you don't waste your cash they are tents but under roofing so no leaks or sun. They also have beds in em so its not bad. You also get access to their kitchen that has everything you need inc. a lockable fridge...

You also get to do your sea dives in Sodwana so basically the best reefs available.
 
there are quite a few bargains to be found on scuba gear here in east london.. i was lucky to get my stuff fairly cheap after selling it and having to buy new for my mozambique trip.

i will make a few phonecalls if you keen.. what amount do you want to spend.. scuba gear down here can go from as little as R2k - as much as R30k..

our water is dirty most of the time so many people buy and simply never get a chance to use it other than the trip they bought it for...
 
Thanks Leslie, I might buy a set of kit from a mate. either Mares or TUSA in think.

but not to sure what a set (BC, reg, octo & bottle) would cost?

around R3500 - R4500 is an average around here. try get steel cylinders if possible as the older aluminuim ylinders require a x ay test to look for hairline cracks and this test is in the region of R700. if it fails they will condem the cylinder by drilling a hole into it. both types of cylinders will need hydro (once every 4 years) and visual (once per year) testing.

a reasonable thing to do in terms of testing is to have the seller pay for the testing should the cylinder fail the test and if it should pass you pay..

both mares and tusa are excellent brnds with mares being my prefered one. (personal preferance)
 
Get kit that you are happy with & that will make you dive better the equipment is all you have when you dive!

I have aqua lung equipment - 2 stage reg & BC when they were bought I made sure they worked for my body type.

Looks like I must meet up with the guys that sorted you out coz I think my wetsuit was made from cheap material ..... It seems to be shrinking around the mid section ... :lol: I'm sure my body type cant be changing only around the mid section....:razz:
 
Hi all,

Just to let you know I've manage to get some equipment.

What I got:

10.2L Ali (had the hydro done yesterday and it pass 100%)
U.S. Divers Reg
U.S. Divers SEA 2 DV
U.S. Divers OCTO
Anatomic Gauge set.
U.S. Divers Aqua Lung Calypsa BC.

Not sure on the relation, but from what I can tell Aqua Lung is / was a product of US DIVERS.

Now to get my course done SOON!
 
From a good mate of mine,

Have you tried Underwater world or google Divetek in jhb.

BTW, how much weight should one use, I just jumped into the pool with my kit, and only wearing 2/3mm shorty suite, and I kept popping back up, that was with 4Kgs of weight......Don't say I'm FAT :nono: the weights must be hollow?
