I've just written (for FAMA) a "long" article on choosing a marine substrate. Once Clay says it's ok, and after it's published in May, I can make it available online. I don't know if y'all get FAMA, but come May, if I forget, I hope someone will bump this and remind me... :)
 
sounds like an article id really like to read.

ps i took a slight double take at the word 'Clay' with the title of the thread, it took my blond brain a slight hiccup to realise that must be a persons name :)
 
I'm not afraid to say, I'm a little proud of myself... it's really not bad for an article trying to cover/summarize so much darn information in one go.

What must I do??? Run bare bottom until May?
Was going for Playsand. (I'm too far from any beach to get the sand here.)

You can run bare bottom until May, or indefinitely if you want. Playsand is usually ok. Depending on the grain size and composition (and what "philosophy" on DSBs you go by), it can be anywhere from adequate to ideal. What is the sand made of? Is it quartz or aragonite?

Well, gosh... I can still talk about sand beds all you want. If anyone has a question, I can answer it (or try to)... :)
 
i have a quick Q, i have 5 dsb running at home all with 10-12cm sand, having read on RC that some use the bucket method, what is the effect on going deeper, say 30cm+ on the sand, wont this just create a bigger anerobic zone?
 
I'm planning on going with a 5cm deep floating dsb in my next sump. What is your take on the shallow floating/non-floating dsb's?
 
that might be to shallow as u looking for a very oxygen depleted zone, so hardly any water flow thru. u will still get bacteria growth, but not the anerobic we looking for

There's really no appreciable benefit to going any deeper than 5 or 6 inches (what's that in cm-- like 13cm to 15cm?). If you want to create a larger anaerobic zone, make the sand bed longer/wider (i.e. increase the "foot print" area) rather than deeper.

This is what we Americans (and Europeans?) call a plenum system. If you're going to go this route, look up Jaubert systems. I don't think 5cm is deep enough unless you're putting a layer of gravel underneath it.
