Hi ppl,

I just bought a surgeonfish yesterday,he was acclimatised proply and then dropped in DT,he didn go into hiding and started swimming checking out the new place.

Thing is he hasnt been eating the flakes,pellets or nori,he just pecks on the algae on the rocks.
what can ido or feed him?
he was eating in the LFS
 
Tried putting nori on a rock with an elastic band. what type of surgeonfish is it.
ive got a regal, poweder blue, naso,powder black , scopa , sailfin, brown surgeonfish and a clown surgeonfish in my DT. the Brown and clown only seem to eat the algae on the glass and rock while the others eat everything.

also try vegie bites they all seem to love that
 
its the grey surgeon with fine orange spots,ill try the nori on rocks.
will go buy the vegibites

Hi Maj - sometimes tangs do take a while before they are comfortable enough to eat the food that you feed. As long as the tang does not look too emaciated then leave the fish be.....

He looks healthy,will wait a while and see if his mood changes.
i will start worrying if he doesnt eat by 2moro

as long as its eating something he should be fine. the is also two other product that worked for me its by seachem. garlicgard and entice. that also worked for me
 
il try the entice and vegi bites,just to be on the safe side.....he looks too nice to let go hungry.
what is the scientific name for these grey surgeonfish with orange spots around the face/eye area?
 
dont stress, even it it takes a week for him to eat. He might get whitespot also. My advice is feed half the amount, but feed it twice. Also don't lift the hood unlesss to feed, just so that they will learn quicker that when the hood is lifted, food is on it's way, just the way they will assossiate it. leave bits of nori for him to snack on though also.

if he is eating off the rocks he is eating ;) - I was worried like you re the eating & now after 2 + weeks my tang does not eat the flakes or frozen food or Nori - he eats off the rocks & I have enough algae to feed 20 tangs.

I just make sure my little guy does not get stress spots or white spot.

Iv got no hood:p,but i only really put my hand in when i want to feed.
I have put some nori on a clip and attached to a rock,but my foxface and wrasse are enjoyin the treats.When im close to the tank he stills hides,so il wait till he settles abit more.

Iv got algae on the Lr,and he is chowing on the LR,so il wait and see if he takes the vegie bites.

you can allso give him scallop and clam makes most fish eat
What also work for me try floating small nori blocks in the stream of the powerheads it is more interesting that way
 
just got some ocean nutrition veggie/spirulina flakes,always heard good things about ocean nutrition.
See if he goes for that later

Surgeonfish is a strange guy or he is still trying to settle in.
He is constantly swimming up and down the one side of the glass,then dashes to his new "claimed spot" which he stole from the Foxface,then he wriggles and shakes all the substrate away as he is burrowing a hole under the LR.
Is this normal behavior?

oh yes,i never see him eating but i see him crapping alot:whistling:
 
Well Maj - crapping is always a good sign! ;)

And - w.r.t the "Strange behaviour" - I have not seen any of my tangs do this, but, then again - fish are very strange sometimes. BUT, I would not put this "strange behaviour" down to being a problem at all......

I see a lot of this type of behaviour from damsels and clown/anemone fish.... perhaps this little guy was raised in a tank full of damsels? ;)

Maybe he was just redecorating his new sleeping place.

Foxface and surgeon are new best frends,thought at 1st they wer fighting as surgeon is always pecking on the foxface,then his spikes raise,but no real chaising each other.Can the foxface in any way "sting" the surgeon with his spikey fins and thus get poisoned?
 
No - the foxface won't "sting" the surgeon. I have not seen this happen. What I do see often though, is that my little scopas tang sometimes "knifes" my unicorn surgeon/tang... leaving a cut in the unicorn's side... but, my fish are all very healthy - so the cut heals very quickly.
 
is it normal for a surgeon to eat brine and mysis shrimp?
he nibbles all day on nori,rocks and glass but when the mysis goes into the Dt,he goes crazy for it!

arent they herbivores?
