Who has/had a Jawfishes?

Hi guys

Just wondering how many of you guys has/had a jawfish?

Can you maybe add a pic of your jaw fish and tell us a bit more about them

i want to add a yellowhead/pearly jawfish to my 2m setup later on...just want your take on these guys:)
 
You don't see many of them around.

Very timid fish, great to be kept with Firefish and Cardinals
 
Yip they are jumpers, I lost both I tried by them jumping out the tank.

They are shy but very interesting to watch. They have huge mouths which open like a 1m snake trying to swallow a cow.
 
Personally, I think that if your water flow is HUGE HUGE in your tank, the fish won't jump.
Because they will be using all their concentration and energy, just to stay in one place! ;)
 
There is a lot of reading to do on these guys. They need different size and shaped stones to line their burrow with. I believe they are very easily intimidated. I think i found an article on reefkeeping.com which was very informative.
 
shot guys....so no one has experience with these fishes

i also read that they need a nice thick layer of substrate to burrow in

so no one has a pic of one in S.A tanks?
 
Hey,lanzo I have jaw fish in my tank and he is awesom.He is about 7cm long and full of fun.He's constantly bobbing about and doing his job,sifting gravel.The other fish don't bother him and he does the same.This fish is excellent to watch.He did however hide for about 3 weeks when he was introduced,I never saw him and thought the shrimp made him a snack but then he surfaced and claimed his place in the tank.He is like a little grader.

I have attempted to breed the Yellow headed jawfish a few years ago. I have had the male holding eggs in his mouth but but have never been lucky enough to get any babies. He used to eat the eggs after a few days probbably because they were not fertile. But not that difficult to keep once settled in the tank. The biggest problem is with introducing the fish into the tank. They tend to swim arround after lights out in a panicked state and then tend to jump out or go over the weir. (Could be due to time difference between here and the States) When introducing the fish leave the room light on it does help a bit. Allso leave a cover (Perpex) over the tank if possible untill settled. It really is worth trying as they are very cute and pretty when settled in a tank. You must have at least 80mm to 120mm of coral gravel in the bottom of the tank for them to build a nest. PM me if you need more info. Why dont you get us some Mexican blue dot jawfish...!!!:p

they are awsome fish but i have never been fully prepared to properly keep these fish and so have unfortunatley lost 2 pairs in the past. in a deep tank they wont really venture near the surface of the tank and are quite safe unless startled, then they may jump. they are actually the main reason i am considering a substrate again.

Mexican blue dot- last time i ordered a whole lot of diff jawfishes and only a 2 survived...but will try again soon...non of them jumped...maye its the 72hour flights:(

shot leslie do you have any pics of your jaw fish, i also want to get me a pair in the future.looks like very cool fish to me
