Hi all

So as some may know I've moved into a new house thats a bit bigger than my old 67sm flat, so with this move comes some new choices......

I contenplating building a new concrete tank with a volume of about 3600 litres, the tank will be build outside attaching to the house on an exterior wall with a viewing glass of about 1.8m x 1m. The basic plan would be a tank 2.2m (L) x 1.5m (w) x 1.2m (h).

Construction: Tank to be of reinforced concrete, for the glass I've got acces to 40mm bullet proof, I know its a bit think but its free:) I'll have to just make sure its not going to be so thick you won't get a clear view:whistling:

Lighting: 2x 400w Mh and T5's, also planning a glass top to maximise the use of sun light.

Flow: use of several pumps and a "piston" type surge device.

Sean has a vast knowledge so I'll pick on his brain, but all comments welcome.

PS just want to say this is not a definate build, still gotta get it past goverment:whistling:

Cool, good luck with the government. In my "grand plan" the front pane is starfire glass, expensive but at least you only need the 1 pane...

Now you're talking lighty!! Tagging along, i've got a feeling this is going to be a good one.

Instead of the MH why dont you use a form of skylight (As you mentioned) supplemented with some actinic and 20 000K T5's... Why direction does the wall face (North, South, East or West) because if it is a north facing wall then it would be perfect for natural lighting...

Would love to go Starfire but think i'd have to sell a kidney for a pice that size.

Well I really hope I can pull this all together, would be my master piece;)

Unfortunately its a south facing wall and there are some huge trees that create shade, so I'd have to use Mh lighting, would be awesome if I didn't.

Cool project my son, I think you must start advertising that kidney anyway :whistling:

Absolutely brilliant! If you duck work today and start early today by tomorrow I can be swimming in it!All the best with the Negotiations! Just tell her its to keep livestock that "need a home" coz being neglected or too big for other reefers tanks - Just put the government down a guilt trip!

WOW lIghty! Now THAT is an awesome idea! I too am following this! I also HOPE that you can get this past your better halve! ;)

Good luck, and keep us updated!

Just to beable to spoil my other half.
You the man:yeahdude:
Let me know when I can come carry some bricks for you :p

There is also cement, concrete, re-bar, etc.:lol: Shot Meks

I'm thinking along similar lines, so will follow closely. Have you thought about temperature? In Pinetown it would only really be a heat in summer issue. Where will you put the sump?

Much cooler here in Westville, but think with the volume of water it should be quite stable, but have a HC-500, HC-250 and a HC150 if push comes to shove. Not sure about the sump, might just extend the tank and build it onto/into the tank?

Thanks for the tip Chika.

But today is not all smiles, Found my Longnose hawkfish had jumped out last night, Really sad.:(

RIP my little friend

Chikaboo i dont think the bank manager like tanks, they want to see swimmings, lapas and triple door garages.
lighty do your home work before you start with a project this big remember electricity is 31% higher.

Great build Justin,
The hardest part of your whole build will be convincing your goverment to agree.
I would love to see this tank build take shape, it would look great.
cheers

This is an amazing concept but just remember the bigger the tank the bigger the juice bill at the end of the month. if you have already considered this then what are you waitning for!!

Have you lost your mind:pYou've got a bond to settle big boy:yeahdude:

You starting to sound like the goverment now:nono: who's side you on anyway?

This project falls under "uplifting" the value of the property - hopefully the bank manager likes marines!

My point exactly!

cool tank skech

Thx Ruan.

I know, but I've learn in life, If you ask all the time you get a "no", Just do it and when they find out you get the silent treatment, which give you time to work on the tank anyway, and if you get kicked onto the lounge couch, its just like camping after a while:lol:

I know, Hoping to be able to suplement light with sunlight and just design the system to be as efficient as posible:whistling:
