Hi, I have +- 9kg of LR that has stood out of water for +- 3 wks already (dried up), was wondering if this would still induce a normal cycle (want to give some to my mate) if added to a new setup .... is it possible that all "life" is already too "dead" or will it still rot/decay ?? (apologies if a stupid question) ..... :p

Tagging along here as my thoughts would be that all would be dead already, so it shouldn't cause a cycle?

YES shrimp - you have answered your own question. YES, you WILL have a cycle, or at least a mini-cycle, if your tank has been cycled already..... I would rather place the life-rock, in a container, with some old tank water, and a power-head....
This will cause the cycle to happen in a seperate container, and then, after testing the water of this container, after about 6 weeks, you can then place these pieces of life rock in your main display tank.

If you have nothing in your display tank that can die (life stock), then by all means - place the pieces of life rock in your display tank, or sump....

ok, will be new DT so if I place LR as is in newly mixed salt water the cycle will happen .... a FULL cycle is wanted/preferred as new tank, will this happen ?

:( sorry ... could the gurus plse confirm whether me just placing this LR (dried up) in DT will cause a normal cycle as I want it to be FULL cycle as new tank and want a good start bacteria wise ;)

Chuck in a piece of fresh shrimp, clam or fish, and this will increase your bacteria population and quicken the cycle.

Also try get some LR or sand from a mature system, this will create diversity in the bacteria cultures

No real guru - (just been doing this long enough ;)) - BUT, YES - a full cycle will happen if you place this live rock into the new tank, with new salt water.......

I would really clean those rocks if I were to use them again, lots of things may have died in it. This will release a ton a ammonia into the tank which will be ok for cycling however this decay will shoot your phos through the roof and then algae will grow like crazy in the tank.

I would take the Dry LR put it in a container with salt water for about 3-4weeks with a powerhead once a week take the LR out replace the water and give the LR a good scrubb. Dont do this in your display tank.

If the LR are nice looking pieces theres no use in wasting them, just seed with a few new peices of LR and it will soon have things growing on it again.
