Hi oom Hennie!

The Torch is coming along very nicely, have got quite a few new heads growing at the moment, thanks again! I want to DIY myself a calcium reactor, could you perhaps help me with material needed as well as a basic design to work from as I like the way you built yours? Thanks in advance!

My pleasure :) and I'm glad that it's already growing new heads

Sure, great to have another DIY enthusiast ;)

I built my reactor based on a design posted on Reef Central by DJ88 back in January 2003. http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=144438&perpage=25&pagenumber=1This eventually became one of the largest threads on Reef Central, totaling some 54 pages and more than 4000 posts, so plan on spending a few hours just reading all the posts...

This design is a recirculating double-chamber SQUARE reactor, made from acrylic (Perspex) sheet. It is very easy to build (being square and using only flat sheet) and is very efficient as it re-uses all excess CO2. One can scale it up (or down) to suit the size of your tank.

Apart from the acylic sheeting, you will also need a CO2 cylinder (I would suggest you buy ane from Deltec, Aqua Medic or Tunze, but you could also use a gas welding (Tig/Mig) cylinder, a CO2 fire extinguisher or even a Soda Stream cylinder with a suitable adapter. You will also need a regulator - I'm using an Argon welding regulator which I bought for about R500.00. It's much larger, more robust and more reliable than any hobby brand, but if you're buying a hobby-brand cylinder it would probably be less hassle to also buy their regulator.

You will also need a reliable pump to circulate the water. An Eheim 1260 would be ideal, but you could use a cheaper Chinese brand if you are prepared to live with additional heat and maintenance.

Anyway, read up on the thread, and then post your questions (if any :whistling:)

Thanks Hennie!

I thought that looked familiar, here is another link on the same project, minus the 4000 posts ;)
