Well as the title said what is the best light to grow my Chaetomorpha

I have a seperate compartment in my sump that I want to grow the Macro Algae as well as over my dsb.

Would prefer not to spend a ton on lights for the sump but if it has to be done then so be it?

I have 2 x 18 watt phillips colour 655 flourescents. Cost me 10 bucks each. My chaeto grows like the hair on Smithers' back.

I think I can recall Anthony Calfo mentioning something in the range of 4000K to 6500K T5's.

Sims,

If budget is an issue, you will have great results with a bunch of cheap energy savers. Try get the 6,400K ones. But as Viper said, first prize would probably be T5's.

Do you get T5's in anything smaller that 2ft - sure I have seen smaller Duel units some where?

I got 3ft T5's lying around that I am going to use on my 3ft setup some day but to lazy to diy something, also my stand is quite high - it would be +/- 55cm to the dsb - would that be ok?

im sure your lighting should be fine!ive got 1*2ft white t8 philips bulb and one 4ft t8 blue.grows wild!

Yes you get 1ft tubes but very expensive. Also, it is marked for FW. Arcadia makes them.

Ok I got a 2ft Daz unit and it is great - it has 2 x 13000k tubes and 1 x 20000k tube, I take it this is not best for the marco algae - where can I get 4000k - 6500k T5 tubes from?

i suppose that this is an area where bulbs should be replaced at least once a year if not more oftern ( for once the price is right to be able to keep up with maintenence on something marine related)....

Yip I did, I must be honest I was quite impressed with this unit nice and neat....

Any decent electrical wholesaler should be able to get an OSRAM 865 for you. 865 denotes 6500K. 840 is 4000K.

Hill I live in Empangeni decent electrical wholesaler we do not have - when I talk about T5's they all look at me like I come from another planet!

Don't worry had the same problem here, until I found a willing sales person to do some investigation work. Most dedicated lighting shops have no idea at all.

Well I'll phone around again but I'm sure I will draw a blank.... maybe with the info you have given me I will come right.... will the 6500 be better than 4500?

SIMS, if you get stuck, give me a shout, I will see if our dimwit lighting shops can get for you, it would be a pleasure to help you out seeing as you helped me with those dvd's :whistling:
