Anyone use mineral mud

I'm going to be setting up a refugium soon, and was wondering whether to put in some mineral mud or not. I have read good reviews online and apparently the caribsea mineral mud does not have to be changed frequently like some other brands . So I have a few questions regarding this.

Is it any good ?
Should I place mud under aragonite or above it?
Do I need to/ is it recommended to put an aragonite sand bed with it?

Either way I will be adding a layer of caribsea rubble zone above the mud & sand. I was originally only going to use the rubble zone but might just add the mud plus an aragonite sand bed and do it properly if that would be the best way to go. Any input would be appreciated .

I spoke to a guy recently, @MLamers, who suprised me when he has been running his tank on mineral mud for 12 years. He sounded like he had an awesome experience with the stuff.
He's not too active on the forums but maybe PM him and ask, doesn't hurt to try.

Will do, think I should just give it a try. Just not sure how much to use for a 140 liter refugium

I'm not sure if you should mix the different substrates on top of each other. I would leave the mud in its own chamber.

My refugium is just basically going to be one tank with an overflow which I'm going t add to my existing system , so I am thinking about putting around 4-6mm mineral mud, with caribsea rubble zone packed on top of it. I did get hold of mlamers as well and he says he used the stuff for 10 years without aragonite, he just has some old corals in there with it and he has all kinds of life such as pods, sea stars , bristle worms etc, plus he does not use supplements in his tank.

Hi. I have been running miracle mud right from the start I set up my first tank more than 10 years ago. I had an entirely natural sump working below a 600l DT. I was running between 40 and 60mm of mud in my sump. Key is also the addition of calerpa. My sump has a lot of life which has just appeared over the years - bristle worms, sea stars, copepodes, snails. Aside from this I have two mechanical filtration areas on either side of the magic mud, never add supplements and do around 10% water change every two weeks.

These are different products though , he is running miracle mud and I plan on getting mineral mud, not sure about the similarities etc. as far as I know miracle mud is a wetter product and it is prescribed to replace it every now and then, mineral mud is not advised to be changed by the manufacturer , I may be wrong
