Dominant one becomes female with Clowns, Female becomes dominant one with humans :whistling:

Clowns are all born males and the dominant one turns to female..and then the manipulation begins...they can mate and lay their eggs but if the male does not care for the brood according to the standards of the female...she will destroy him..thats why in the reef females normally have a choice of males to choose from...just in case one ought to meet his maker there is a back up - cruel to be kind..lol

Thanks for the thread. Got two clowns today and one was gunning the other one quite bad but they settled down now. Only problem is one is staying in a corner now

First, what size are they? If both big, you might have bought 2 that is already female. 2cm and less, then almost sure both are male.

difficult to say. At that size, they can change. If one is aggresive and the other does a shake dance move in front of the aggressor, then the shaker is the male. Some funny little dance move. When you see it you will know what I mean

Ill keep my eye on them. Luckily the one has calmed down and not chasing the other one anymore. One stays in the corner now and thats bad. But ill give them some time

Age is also important. In a group of captive bred clowns, the largest will become female, pair off and those two will move off. Then the next biggest will become female, pair off etc etc. Depending on the size of the tank they were raised in, and their age, more than one might can become female at the same time and pair off respectively.

I like the dance move idea. Mine just runs for his life. :whistling::lol:

Good question franco, would also like to know. Also will my one clown come out of the corner after some time or not? The other one isnt doing anything to it anymore

Some useless info on clowns:.. The group is made up of a hierarchy with the female fish being the dominant and generally the largest fish in a given group. The second in command of the group is usually the largest male, who is also generally the most aggressive male of the group. This male will pair off with the female to breed. The rest of the males in the area will not breed with the female. Upon breeding, the female will lay sometimes thousands of eggs close to their home, usually on a rock or coral. The two will then take turns guarding the eggs until they hatch around a week later.
If the female dies, the dominate male will then begin to gain weight and will become the female of the group. It will then choose a breeding partner among the available males, which is usually the largest male available. The two will pair off and breed together until something happens to one or the other, at which point the cycle begins again.
