Default Powder blue tang care
So im looking at adding a new tang to my setup, which is a 1.5m 700L. I have 4 tangs. I recently removed the largest, which was a sailfin.

I have been looking at options and its either a Gem tang or powderblue.

Now i have had a wipe-out before because of a powder blue. The plan is a 6 week QT this time around, doing waterchanges from the DT into the QT tank. This way i should see if any possible parasites that may exist in the DT affect the powder blue. Do you guys think that would be a good way to do it?

I think you are nuts for wanting to add a white spot magnet. And then they are ridiculously aggressive as well. Not worth it IMO.

One of the few tangs I had luck with. When I added mine I added a white spot treatment called myxazin as a default. Apparently myxazin is no longer reef safe but I'm sure there are other medicines. I fed the guy like crazy with pellets, flakes, frozen and nori until he settled and then he was fine. The down side is that they are aggresive and later or current additions will get hammered. Mine literally attacked a yellow tang to death.

ON the purple tang, I havent had a problem with mine. I added a yellow tang after him and he chased it for a week or so but now thay leave one another alone and actually get along

BTW, the tang would get a few spots from time to time but nothing too bad providing I kept the guy happy. He did die after 18 months or so from white spot. Why I dont know as the guy was in a big tank with no aggro tank mates except for himself, he was well fed and fat. None of my other fish were affected

My advice would be a SOLID QT of at least 6 weeks(min) IMPO, Treat him properly and feed him till he pops. get a nice small one. My fav fish and if i ever get a 2M + tank will def want one

Had mine in QT for 6 months, did the water changes as above, tang was spotless.

Put it into my DT 2 weeks ago, its now full of WS
So far none of my existing fish have WS.

Will the Pblue heal or will a whole bunch of the existing fish also contract the desease?

We will soon see. What I do know is this will be the last of the powder blue/brown I ever buy

of course I would of quarantined!
I was oozing with confidence as nothing had gone wrong in my tank for like a year, that confidence has been knocked out of me now! so much gone wrong lately!
That fresh water dip actually did do the trick on the nudis hey, but was a delayed job. Dipped them, put them back in their nudi free qt tank, and then the nudis came out in force, only to die a hour or two later! weird! but whats left of my zoas are doing well now.. just have to wait for the nudis to starve in the dt now

Just a question? when you moved the fish from QT to system, did you catch it with a net?

Caught it out the FO system (which was a treated set up) with a catch box.
When I put it in the main DT , the smaller purple tang harrassed it for a day. Gave it a few cuts and scratches.
All thats over but the pblue now has WS.
I'm hoping with the stable system, the Pblue eating well and no more stress, the WS will go.

The eternal optimist

I got no proof. But I think certain tangs skin is more delicate than we think. And more prone to damage compared to other tangs. And when there is damage, then WS got a place to get hold.

I think the tangs we see as WS magnets, Powder Blue, Powder Brown, Achilles skin is too delicate for our nets. Its like catching antelope with barbed wire. That is why these fish tends to break out just after a move.

But as you said, you used a fish box. But then it got into a fight with the Purple tang. So your case cannot proof my theory.

I need to buy one myself to proof it. Not likely, I'm not a Dr Terrible.

When I was planning to catch my PB to make way for angels...I figured this was going to be along effort...so, one day while I was trying to fix the nori clip onto the glass with my bare hand.....my PB as bold as ever decided to swim right up against the glass and my hand....I actually slowly tightend my grip (but not too tight)....and took him out of my tank with just one hand, he was almost in a comatose state, like those guys that flip sharks onto their noses. Did not move a muscle as i gently placed him in the sump....anyways the following day i looked for him (had some rocks down there)...found him beaten and eaten....fins chowed, lower lob of the tail, dorsal easten right down to the meat....thought he was a gonna....moved him back to the display tank.....then a some weeks later into the nursery tank. He made a full recovery, thought his fins would never go back. No treatment of meds whatsover.

My view with PB's, is that they are hit and miss, possibly also cure treatments make things worse than before....just feed and pray he lives. If u worried about this and history ahs shown....rather get something known to be more hardy.

Sorry i digress...thought i would just mentioned that story. Oh, and mines has never shown whitespot since moving to the sunlit tank.

No he did not go crazy, was later afternoon, so getting dark...was perfectly calm when i put him in.

To this day I have no idea, even when i cleaned up that sump to put in my DSB , looked all over for the culprit and found nothing....it was almost if something ate him alive, but in the process did not move or swim away. Perhaps an overnight fin fungal infection....who knows, was just weired.
