Hi MASA members

I thought i would start my own livestock collecting thread.

Hoping to religiously visit the beaches at least once a week.

Will keep posting as i go, so stay tuned.

Please Note: I am only taking what i need from the ocean, even though the license allows for more. I do not see the need to over harvest.

I will assist you with this conservation thought.

Do not remove any species from the ocean/rock pools unless you fully understand what the species requirements are. By removing "YOU" take full responsibility for the life of the lifeforms you remove.

Make sure you plan and research your collection. Do not just collect then come here for ID please.

YOU need to ensure that what you remove is what YOU are capable of keeping and able to provide the animal/creature with a happy and longevity life. if you don't know or are unsure, then leave it/them in the ocean/sea. :m106:

Collecting is a privilege and the permit is specific in this regard.

sorry not attacking anybody but just something i always wondered about including for myself ... guys catch then go home that night and post on here asking what it is... but then you cant take it back,you cant give it away and you also cant kill it obviously.. i know i try to NOT carry my phone or tablet when im at the beach or rock pools but looks like its the best way and hopefully somebody on here will reply soon enough then you know if you should take home or release again..

or simply walk back down to where you caught it from ad drop it back in the rock pool.

If we, as you say, call ourselves conservationists we wouldn't have anything in our lounge to display the natural beauty of the ocean, Let's close down our tanks as well as this forum based on aforementioned posts.

Fish in tanks live shorter lives than in the ocean. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable regarding the requirements of most of my livestock but lack the fundamentals of the complete requirements of the Livestock. If NJ, you feel you know it all, good for you. When you start dosing Terbium, Dysprosium, Holmium into your tanks please advise us on how it goes.

There's no need for the above, it's a flippen hobby for goodness sake.
 
The snails, the one on the left? that looks like some other snail. Hard to say due to the picture being out of focus. Looks like a Nerita. The other 2 snails are Coronatus.

The fish does look like a juvenile. So not 100% sure on it but does look like a Lunula.

Yeah seems the best way, will try find a book/digital book on the internet. So for now we will need to post for id before leaving the beach.

@Nemos Janitor has taken his time out to help/post on the thread,
If he didn't others would follow in my foot steps and do the incorrect things.

Unfortunaley we cannot reintroduce livestock back into the ocean as it would die, so would need to get id before returning home.

Snails all Coronatus. The one on the left is the smooth type, which you did advise me is not good to take as it might die.
So only took one, instead of more and hes doing fine in the tank :)
Yes fish id 100% :) and doing great also.

WOW i apologize if i came across aggressive. All i was trying to do is emphasize a point that has been debated here before.

The prime point is that collecting is, and can be so much fun and rewarding if done responsibly. "Some" reefers have no regard for what they collect. These reefers head to the beach with a bucket and R80.00 permit and just remove whatever they can get their hands on. This is so uncool and if we have lots of threads where heaps of ID please for creatures, it will send alarm bell around the conservationists.

So as i have said previously. Whatever one removes from the ocean one must take responsibility for. That is why planning is so much a part of the fun of collecting.:m106:
