Hi Guys,

I have been wanting to do some diving and collecting for a while now. I do quite abit of spearfishing and crayfishing but I have never tried to specimen dive.

I have seen other guys come out of the water with moorish idols, butterflies six line wrasse.

Do you know where I can get one of those plastic bag nets or how to make one just to make my life a little easier.

From what I have heard this is a really difficult thing to do.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

You could try making them with old tennis rackets. Though you would need to hand stitch it

The previous one i made was with a the thin part from a alluminium curtain rail, get someone to sew the plastic bag then thread it through and shape accordingly.

to get fish out of holes use a doubled wire with plastic stips at the end similar to a flasher used for spearing.

If you a spearo then your breathing is already good i guess cos those fish can get very tricky.

Thanks for the response. Yeah i have heard that they are very tricky. Where do you go diving for specimens?

To get the fish out of the holes to you use that like feather duster looking tool?

Breath hold is not bad, I can see myself getting frustrated though. :)

Do you stick the net with cotton or somthing like fishing line?

Used to snorkel at the bluff along time ago, havent collected for many years as i did not have a tank.

Yip the feather dusting looking tool. Snorkelled at bluff last week tuesday saw
a few species of butterflies and some tangs.

My mum has a sewing machine so it was easy to sew it. Nylon will work with a few cable ties to hold in places.

You can find a surprising ammount in the rock pools in natal if you know where to look.
I was down at the south coast the other day and I saw plenty of racoon butterflies, even saw a bristletooth tang. I didn't wanna try catch them as my tank is too small and I don't know if I would be able to put them back. I did catch a wrasse and a pair of interesting little blennies called hotlips.
I have also seen plenty of life in the rock pools on the bluff.

One thing I learned is not too try and chase the fish with the net but to rather try and chase them into it, with another net or a stick.

Yeah you are right about the rockpool life here in KZN. I used to get most of my stuff from there. I have upgraded now to a 4 ft and would really like to get a small butterfly now. Some tangs would be nice too.

Recently I caught a small Lionfish in a rockpool in Isipingo. I gave it to my mate as he has no other fish that can be eaten by it.

I am ideally looking for rare rockpool items. I am going to attempt a dive this long weekend. I will let you know how things go. Last time I went I got 2 very small wrasse. I have no idea what their names are. I will try get a photo so that we can ID them.

Where abouts on the south coast did you go and see the racoons?

Oh ok cool. I went camping there once. It was really nice. I must go and try it again. Thanks for the info man! I might even see if I can get there this weekend.

Yes we can, Sometimes you hit the luck with some more rare stuff but its mostly the common fish in the shallow pools.
 
Yeah even butterflies and interesting things like that.
 
guys - I am new to marine. Catching some fish would make life easier for me - the pocket will survive the drought!!!

I am in Durban till Sunday lunch - going to see the Waterboy tomorrow morning...

Please can someone help with nearby places?
 
Its not that easy you have to look around.
You should also mke sure have a temporary place to keep it like a bucket with a pump in.
 
well, I got back with some livestock...didnt have a battery operated airpump which saw some of the few fish perish...even though I did water changes... :(

the trick is to find a way to catch the buggers...lol

Patience is the key I find. If you just rush around the place trying to net something then,

1. You will stress the fish out so much that it will die.

2. Anything half decent will just hide under the rocks and wont come out.
