Very intresting read, but I'm one of those who's totaly against siporax(ceramic rings). I think it depends on what your tank needs to thrive in, as for me, been there, done that, got the T-shirt and it didn't work at all.I'll rather stick to the regular methods of DSB, cheato, LR and a reactor here and there...
But treuly very nice colour on his SPS...

i was very interested in this when it came out 15 odd years ago but with what we know now about the nitrogen cycle its not at all necessary.. and an expensive alternitive to bioballs.

more for koi IMO.

Juging by the amount of fish in the tank. He doesn't really need alot of live rock. Also the Siporax is performing the work of live rock as well. Arobic bacteria.

I won't judge the success of this tank on Siporax. Very little live stock, lekka water volume, regular water changes plus I can see that he does alot of maintenance on the tank to keep every thing as clean as possible. I just think we are past Siporax stage..:p

Back in 2002 when i started marines, used 'ceramic rings', bio balls, wet/dry trickle filters. The guy in question knows his stuff, it may look simple to a new reefer....but it took me 6 years understanding of water chemistry before finally making headway into sps. There are different ways to skin a cat, the guys with lots of knowledge could easily do the same and make things work using methods long regarded as old way of doing things.

The key is not the product (Siporax, Carbon Dosing, N & P Pellets, Zeolites, etc), its the reefers understanding of water chemistry and marine husbandry that will get you results that you want ;).

very well said my son :)

I used 50 litres of Siporax in my 7500 litre system. The huge advantage of using siporax is the extreme huge surface for bacteria. If there is hardly any space for filtration, siporax is the way to go. If you got enough space for filtration media, you use natural zeolite, which is much cheaper than anything else, when you compare the bacteria surface.

This is the Reef Gospel as spoken by Adee, i couldnt agree more

and got the coral fingers to prove it

Dankie Oom :).

coz he KNOWS his water chemistry! AMEN!
Ahem. My young Jedi's...I aim to do as I preach :whistling:.

Huh?, would not say that, people may want a frag.

Seriously and not to detract from this thread...I'm sure Luckyfish attests that it works for him, as it did back then for me (I think), but then again i think i got many things wrong in other departments. I did find though when I removed them after a some years in my system they literally crumbled in my fingers.

Another thought that comes to mind is how new things develop, replaces the norm and understanding of yester year. Does'nt surprise me that these rings are being relooked. Modern day marketing and fads in short, are efforts for companies to re-introduced themselves in order to constantly generate income I suppose. I supposed without investigative changes we would not be without some modern and excellent products. Now on that note...where did I put my bioballs and haircurlers...
