Hi all
started this 120l nano tank recently, tanks been running for 9months now. have 2 clown fish and 2 hermit crabs, dont think the 1 crab is reef safe as it is attacking my blue legged hermit and going all Rambo on my poor coral :( going to exchange it for another blue legged crab tomorrow. cant afford a test kit so dont ask me all the chemistry that is in my water:lol:(ps: i am still a student hence why i am broke lol). i want those purple looking coral line on my live rocks, they reccomended me to buy the redsea reef foundation abc+ but they so expensive :( can i just have 1 of them like A or B or C for the coraline algae.really looking forward to the next meeting :) would like to get great advice from you guys and buy cheap frags. here are some pics, please give me advice if i am doing something wrong as this is my first time having a salt water tank:thumbup:

Coraline will come by themselves if your parameters are ok. What you can do is to add a small piece of rock that have some.

And, yeah, I would also swap the top hermit.

The purple coraline algae is pretty much calcium buildup, but the only way it will start growing in the tank is if it is introduced. I wouldn't add supplements in at the moment unless you add it for corals, I'd rather buy a piece of live rock that is covered with it and add it to the tank. It will eventually spread.

If you really in a hurry, there is a product called Purple-Up that could help.

thanx :) will deff try this purple up stuff :)...i want to attend these club meetings hoping some one would scrap some coraline algae for me to introduce into my tank:biggrin: i dont want to buy another live rock as i brought plenty but they all got no coraline on it :( oh ya! i wanted to buy a RO unit for weekly water change but they quite expensive, i find a local store that sells RO water, is it cheaper to rather buy the RO unit and make my own water or is it cheaper to buy the water? they selling it at R1.40 per litre. is it reasonable price?

Coraline is over rate IMO, once you have it you need to cean it off everything you did'nt want it growing on. Like the glass, really becomes a pain in the @ss

On average, you loose about 10% water due to evaporation per week. There are loads of factors influencing it, like fans, algae scrubbers etc. But 10% is a guideline.
Plus you will do 10% water changes.
On your 120L system, that is equal to 24L per week. That is if you mix your own salt. But that do imply you buy a refracto meter as well.
Anyway for RO, 12L * 4 weeks at R1.40 will work out to R67.20
Over a year it will be R806.40

Salt mix, also 12L per week, at Rxx ??? (not sure what they will charge you nowadays), Lets use R2.50 for this discussion. That is R120 and over a year R1440.

Total R2246.40

That is more than the price of a RO unit. But still excluding the refracto plus new membranes after a year.

Worthwhile? Only if you check what the salt mix will cost you compared to buying your own bucket of salt. But salt is another 700 plus expense. So you need to justify the outlay of the RO unit, refracto, salt plus 2 buckets. Easily R3000.

Not sure if on 120L its worthwhile to have your own RO system. Unless you can get one in the for sale section for cheap, but then again most likely you need to get a new membrane.

Advantage is less trips to the LFS, less change for impulse buy, always extra water available...

Your decision.

Thanx Riaan:thumbup: i got red sea salt (7kg) so should last me quite a while if i get the Ro unit, i went to Jungle Aquatics today and i have to say! They are very helpful! Even though its quite a trip from jhb south to fourways, but the trip was deff worth it. Got the Red sea coraline Gro instead of the purple up.
i found a Aquamedic Easyline 150 RO Unit, second hand at my LFS but again his trying to rip me off. its a 1 year old unit with no membrane, what would be a reasonable price for this unit? if i do get this unit, where would i buy membrane from and the cost of these membrane?

I would talk to Bryan at Jungle Aquatics if he is your LFS. Like most of the reputable LFS ( sponsors) on this forum. You get a honest deal.

Great that you support the sponsors.

Looks good! I have the baby brother! 37L thinking of upgrading to 120L! So far I am happy with my tank! By the sounds of it you are as well! Only problem I have is heat! On a hot day the water Temp climbs! I have to keep the lid open with pegs.
