My sump is really small so I cant lie my heater horizontally. Does the whole heater have to be submerged or only from the coils down?
 
The thermostat of the heater is usually in the top half so if that is out of the water the heater will be working to air temp and not your water temp.
 
Yes. Try to angle it and not have it vertically otherwise it would influence the thermostat
 
As long as the heater remains fully submerged it will work properly, where it is placed is not so important as how it is placed.
 
I've got two heats in my sump one chamber before the return chamber. I have a temperature controller connected but would just like to find out the best place for the probe to be positioned.

@butcherman that's were the heaters are. Where is the best place for the probe ? Or in the same chamber
